Ponyo on the Cliff Local Trailer

Encore Films has provided the localized trailer for the upcoming Anime film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Take a look:

For more info, check out our previous post on the movie.

Farewell to STAC

Another chapter in the annals of  the local anime community closes as after more than a decade in operation, the Shiro Tsubasa Animation Club, organisers of the End Of Year cosplay event, has disbanded. As mentioned in their announcement yesterday, chief among the reasons for closing shop are lack of new membership and event financing. This official statement confirms rumors circulating earlier that this year’s EOY was indeed the final one, after many years of holding the event since 2000. As the NTUVAS  has a long running relationship with their club, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank the club’s former members for their contribution to the communtiy and wish them good luck with their future endeavours!

Ponyo on The Cliff – In Cinemas 1/1/2009!

Coming to our shores this new year is another big Anime movie! Straight from Japan’s box office, where it earned both critical and financial success, comes Studio Ghibli and celebrated animation director Hayao Miyazaki‘s  latest offering, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (Gake no Ue no Ponyo).

Putting a spin on the classic tale of the “Little Mermaid”, Ponyo on the Cliff is centred around a boy named Sosuke, and his strange and magical pet goldfish Ponyo who he rescues from the sea. As their friendship grows, Ponyo wishes to give up her aquatic lifestyle to become a human girl. Little does she know that her choice comes with dire concequences not just for both of them, but the world itself!

With movies like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” to Miyazaki’s name, the movie promises to be wonderfully crafted personal tale, in the vein of  Miyazaki’s own “My Neighbour Totoro“, for all ages to enjoy. It will also prove a visual treat for the eyes, with 170,000 seperate animation cels used for the film, a record for Mr. Miyazaki!

Like Sky Crawlers, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is distributed by Encore Films and is exclusive to Golden Village Cinemas. Come the 1st of January, do go catch a chance this new Miyazaki classic on the big screen!

NTUVAS Message Board

With the demise of our old forum, the NTUVAS has established a new message board here! It actully has been in operation for a week or so just that it slipped my mind to doa blogpost about it. It is kinda small now since it just started, but hopefully it will continue to grow with your participation and feedback. So please do join in our community. Hope to see you there!

EOY 2008 Post Event Report

Well, once again another big anime event has passed. Compared to the newcomer AFA, the EOY cosplay event is rather well established having run since the year 2000 and the NTUVAS has a long history with it. This year is no exception, with our club in attendance at the event, our memebers turning up either as helpers, as cosplayers, or just as regular attendees. We also had a booth on site which I spent the whole day rooted to.  Because of that, I didn’t really get to see much of the event. Fortunately this means you are spared another multipart essay report like our AFA coverage. Instead, we have a guest post from our club members cloud0_o andラビღ. A big thanks to them for their help. Read on more on their joint coverage of the event!

The long awaited End-of-Year (EOY) cosplay event held by Shiro Tsubasa Anime Club (STAC) had arrived!!! The whole event just ended yesterday evening (13th December 08, Saturday) at Singapore Expo. In line with STAC’s 10th anniversary, this year’s theme is “Retro” to celebrate their long history in organizing the annual EOY Cosplay event. Thus, cosplayers will be focusing more on animes that are dated before 2000.

For an overview of the event, the number of Naruto and Bleach cosplayers had decreased. Unlike previous years where you will find a whole bunch of mainstream Naruto and Bleach roaming around the event grounds, many cosplayers shifted their focus towards D.Gray Man, Vampire Knight, Final Fantasy etc. An interesting sight is that, I notice that there are quite a few no. of crossdressers, whereby guys are dressed up as female characters, like a guy version of miko. Hmmm, or is it actually quite common but I didn’t notice it before.

From the Retro category, we have Card Captor Sakura, Mario Brothers, Macross, Teru Teru Bozu, Inuyahsa, Ranma 1/2, Shaman King, Yugioh etc. I personally feel that the ones that made the deepest impression on me (and I believe many others) are the Mario and Luigi pairing, plus Teru Teru Bozu, as they fulfill the theme very well—very retro. In addition, these characters are seldom seen in previous cosplaying events, providing a very refreshing experience. How nostalgic!

All thanks to Teru Teru Bozu , for blessing us with a great weather during the day of event ^_^

Other than the retro theme, we were able to spot characters from popular anime series of recent years like Code Geass, Vampire Knight, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, D.Gray Man etc. The Code Geass group had even brought along their own Knightmare Frame Lancelot while the D.Gray Man team came with their newly designed uniforms.

Mecha cosplay on the rise, Gundam Exia at Cosfest08 and AFA08, and there is Lancelot at EOY08. Cool!!!

Lancelot together with Suzaku and Anya. Can’t imagine how Suzaku is going to board Lancelot.

In my opinion, the Jasdevi (D.Gray-man) cosplayers did a very good job with the detailed costumes and the grey face paint!

For games characters wise, the dominance of Final Fantasy characters is clear. Assorted characters from the Final Fantasy franchise were seen and among which, Final Fantasy VII characters were the most eye-catching. As the game is dated back into the 90s, considering the level of graphics design during that time, the characters’ costumes were not extremely detailed. Therefore, cosplayers are dressed based on their knowledge from the recent FFVII products, games such as Dirge of Cerebus, Crisis Core, and the eye candy movie, Advent Children.

Below is an army size Naruto squad, which was one of the most popular team around the whole event. Even during the MC hosting the event on stage, there are still a large swarm of people following the Naruto team around, trying to snap up more shots of them. Plus they did an awesome performance during the cosplay competition.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend special congratulations to the second runner-up of the individual category, Teru Teru Bozu, who awed the audience with her self-made Teru Teru Bozu costume (made in record 2 days!). This person is none other than our former chairperson and current VAS “senior minister”, Dcal! Congratulations! ^^

A greater variety of booths could be seen at this year’s EOY and there were quite a number of nicely drawn fanart stalls. Our very own NTU-Visual Arts Society has also joined in to sell a number of second hand goodies, like VCDs, OST soundtracks, anime flyers and magazines etc (As well as a Kannagi fan poster done by none other than our TTB cosplayer!).

End of Year Cosplay Event 2008

It’s that time of the year again! The End of Year (EOY) cosplay event organised by Shiro Tsubasa Anime Club has come around once again, being held at Singapore Expo on the 13th of December (Saturday) from 12pm to 7pm. That’s in a week’s time!

Being one of the bigger cosplay events here in Singapore, expect to see lots of cosplayers turning up for the event! Of course you don’t have to be one to attend, you can just turn up to appreciate the effort they’ve put into their craft This year’s theme is Retro Anime, with cosplayers dressing up as chaarcters from Anime before the year 2000 getting special discounted entry, so cosplayers, whip out all your Evangelion, Patlabor and Rose of Versailles costumes to enjoy this offer. The usual ticketing price will be $12.

You can also look around at the many booth vendors in attendance. Our own NTUVAS will be having a booth there, selling second hand anime goods. Do pay us a visit, and we hope to see you there!
