AFA Press Coverage! All the juicy details that you know you want!

And this is what everyone has been waiting for ever since last year. The in-depth details of what’s in store for you this year at AFA X. More after the jump.

Image once again shamelessly ripped from the AFA X website

The time is 1122. Shawn Chin, the Festival Director of AFA, finally takes his turn to head the conference. You can almost feel the excitement in the room as everyone geared themselves up to listen to what he has to say. And he did not disappoint.

First off, lets go through the old timers, shall we? AkibaTown will be taking up a good section of the event floor as usual, bringing with them their usual collection of exclusive merchandise straight from Japan. Brands include Bandai with all their Gundam figurines, Cospa with their ever popular T-Shirts and other goods, and Bushiroad, creator of the popular trading card games WeiB Schwarz, Chaos Project and Victory Spark. Frankly, I’m more interested in the Bushiroad booth, since I’m a WS player. I hope they will be selling individual cards or that they’ll be letting their booster packs go for cheap.

And oh, old school mecha fans would find something here that they would like – a first chance to get a new Mazinger Z figurine that would go on sale right here at AFA.

Anyway, speaking of WS, there will be a regional tournament for the card game here, same as last year. The champion will then move on to Japan to take on the top players in the world. And while we are on the note of tournaments, the Regional Cosplay Championship (RCC) will be making its 2nd appearance. Other than Kaname returning as a guest judge again, there isn’t much difference compared to last years RCC, so lets move on…

Is that the screaming of fangirls I hear?

Apparently, the Kadokawa World Tour and an Eva Store would be hanging around at AkibaTown as well. Kadokawa will be bringing their flagship titles like Haruhi and Shakugan no Shana, while Eva will just be…Eva. Judging from the pictures, it seems that they will be mainly selling t-shirts. Will they have anything else in store for us? Only time can tell.

I, for one, hope that Kadokawa will be selling DVDs of The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, but fat chance of that happening. Beh.

Anyway, the only government sponsored maid café is back, this time with a new look. Yes, the girls of the Moe Moe Kyun maid café would once again be serving your every needs, only instead of maid uniforms, they would be dressed as schoolgirls. Which brings us to their interesting choice of name…

Moe Moe Kyun : School Days version.

All I can say is Nice Boat.

And because the MMK has been doing so well, they had to find another way to milk the human herds dry. And since the guys are already lining up to give the maids their cash, one has to target the opposite sex. Which logically brings us to…

The Atelier Royale Café. Butlers. Fangirls galore. Enough said.

And oh, Danny’s coming back. Dancing Trooper. I wonder what interesting stuff he’ll have for us this year?

That basically covers the returning elements. So, what’s new for AFA?

Inspired by how well the K-ON seiyuus were received last year (I’m still bothered by the fact that Mio didn’t show up), the AFA crew has brought along TWO seiyuus this year!……Well, not exactly. One of the guest is an individual, and the other is a group, so…Um…Uh….

ANYWAY, first up we have Kana Hanazawa!! Known for the lovely mellow quality of her voice, she has done many of my favorite characters from the more recent shows, such as Sengoku Nadeko from Bakemonogatari and Tachibana Kanade from Angel Beats. I wonder if we can get her to sing Renai Circulation on stage? Then we all can dance along. LOL

Also, I really should get Kana-san to sign my Kanade tablemat.

The other are the seiyuu group Milky Holmes. Frankly, I’ve never heard of them, so I don’t know what to expect. Guess I’ll see and judge them on the day itself.

Other than having Kana-san over, there are two things that I’m really looking forward to. One of them is the Anime Screening. Yup, that’s right – this years AFA features anime screening. And not just anime episodes, but full length movies. What movies, you might ask? Well, just think about who the sponsors for AFA are and you would get a hint….

That’s right. Bandai and Kadokawa. And what do they own? Gundam 00 and Suzumiya Haruhi. In other words….

Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer and The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi. Two movies that I would pay dearly to watch. Now, to really throw people into crazy fan mode, they should also bring in the new Nanoha movie and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Now that would really rock the house down. But considering how the two movies will be screened EVEN BEFORE THE DVDS ARE RELEASED, I’ll take what I can. The trailers are below if you want to see them.

Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer. Strange Japanese English strikes again.

涼宮ハルヒの消失

The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi

And finally, we have the “I Love Anisong” concert. I can never understand why they chose that name, but well…
This years concert lineup is downright amazing, let me tell you. If you thought last year’s crew of Aniki, May’n, Yoshiki and Shoko-tan was good, this year’s will blow you away.

Once again, May’n and Ichirou Mizuki will be returning to Singapore for the 3rd time. You can always expect them to put on a good show.

Gracing Singapore’s shores will be the female rock group SCANDAL. I enjoyed their Skunkan Sentimental, which was the ending theme song for FMA:Brotherhood, so I’m looking forward to seeing them live.

Not to be beaten are the duo angela, consisting of atsuko on vocals on KATSU on guitar. To be honest, I’ve never heard of them before today, so I guess I’ll be watching some of their youtube videos to get a better feel of their songs.

Last, but certainly not least, is JAM F-ing Project. Yes –JAM Project will be having their first ever concert here in Singapore. As a fan of their songs (I CAN FLY! HEY!), this is the group that I’m most looking forward to. (MOTTO MOTTO!!)

And that pretty much covers the main attractions that AFA has in store for you this year. There’s just the little matter of the pricing, through…

Pricing this year is a little different than that of yesteryears. For one, the entire AFA stage is divided into two – the Festival area and the Stage area. As the name implies, the Festival area is where the main bulk of the booths will be. You only have to pay the low low price of $8 to gain access to this place. However, doing so would NOT allow you to enter the Stage area, where the really awesome stuff would be showing. Buying the Festival+Stage access ticket would set you back by $15.

The biggest change, however, is that you no longer have free access to the concerts. No, to enjoy the epic performance by JAM Project and friends, you would have to buy the Concert Tickets, which comes in 3 forms.

First: The 2 Day Concert VIP Pass, with a price tag of $198, gives you 6 hours worth of concert performance and premium numbered seating. In other words, if you want first row seats, this is the one you want to buy.

Second: The 1 Day Concert VIP Pass, coming in at a hefty $118. It gives you the same privileges as the 2 Day VIP pass above, but I’d still rather get the two day one. Still, if you like only one band and not the others, you can just get this package.

Third: The Concert Standing Pass, at a mere $55. As the name implies, you won’t be given seats, but would instead have free standing access. If you find the VIP Passes to be a little on the steep side, this is the deal for you.

Yup, major changes on the pricing system. Still, it doesn’t matter to me, as I will be getting the 2 Day Concert VIP, same as I did last year. More details for the pricing can be found here.

That’s pretty much the gist of what has been revealed during the AFAX Press Conference yesterday. More in-depth news can be found over at the AFA website, located over here…

Hope to see you there!
